Super Galactic Expansive "Constant + Variables"

‘Constant + Variables’, the long-awaited follow up to Super Galactic Expansive’s 2010 debut album ‘Supersensible Science’, is an insightful, introspective, psychedelic odyssey into a powerful  honest Truth of the Universe: …The only thing that’s Constant in Life is Change, and Change is nothing more than Variables thrown into the Equation of Life… Super Galactic Expansive is the unique collaborative glitch-hop project of electronic composer, Jamie Watts (KiloWatts) and poet/lyricist, Anand Petigara (Amagine). A distinctive synergy takes place in the studio when these two intriguing minds enter into the creative flow together, finding a unique dynamic and gentle balance, which merges their contrasting art forms into a congruent, singular voice evoking deep, personal and universal meaning all listeners can resonate with. After the release of their highly experimental debut album, Supersensible Science, SGE has processed and integrated the gamut of experiences – the growing pains and growing joys – that have marked their evolution and their lives, to create a stunningly beautiful, intricately precise, and powerfully cathartic expression of an undeniable process we all must engage and endure on our own accord…that of deep and meaningful change in one’s life. Put your headphones on, open your heart and mind, and enjoy this sonic journey into the power of transformation…

Nine Times Blue debut Full-Length "Falling Slowly" out November 20th

Nine Times Blue Soars with Power Pop Influences on Debut Full-Length CD, Falling Slowly, Coming November 20 from Renegade Recordings, with National Distribution by City Hall Records

ATLANTA, GA – Renegade Recordings announces a November 20 release date for Falling Slowly, the debut full-length CD from Atlanta-area based power pop quartet Nine Times Blue, which will be distributed nationally by City Hall Records. Co-produced by Bryan Holmes of The Producers, Falling Slowly was mixed and mastered by two-time Grammy-winning producer Don McCollister, who’s worked with such top-selling artists as Sister Hazel, Indigo Girls, Third Day and Shawn Mullins. Nine Times Blue is comprised of Kirk Waldrop (vocals, guitar), Greg King (guitar), Jeff Nelson (bass) and Jason Brewer (drums), and the album features numerous guest appearances, including John Faye (IKE, The Caulfields), David Myhr (The Merrymakers) and Bryan Holmes.

The new album’s nine original songs showcase the creative writing style of bandleader Kirk Waldrop, who takes his classic power pop influences (The Smithereens, Squeeze, Gin Blossoms, Jimmy Eat World and Plain White T’s) and embodies them with a modern esthetic that makes them newly relevant. Bryan Holmes, leader of ’80s power pop hit makers The Producers, described the band as having “great songwriting talent with a distinctive, unique voice and yet the songs maintain a familiarity that radio will like. It’s new and fresh, but with a hint of ‘have I heard this song before’?”

Nine Times Blue, whose music has been described by one critic as “clean-cut jangly rock,” will kick off the release of Falling Slowly with several Atlanta advance performances, including a 7-8 PM set as part of the “Barktober Fest” at Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewery on October 27, a benefit for Angels Among Us Pet Rescue (www.angelsrescur.org); as well as a show with several other area bands on November 9 at the Famous Pub. The band will celebrate its official CD release with a show on December 1st at Smith’s Olde Bar in the downstairs Atlanta Room. (1580 Piedmont Ave. NE; www.smithsoldebar.com), with additional groups to be announced. The band will also support the new CD with tour dates throughout the southeast and east coast from December into the first months of the new year.

The name Nine Times Blue comes from a Michael Nesmith song of the same name.  It was recorded by The Monkees, but never released officially until it was re-recorded years later on Mike Nesmith’s First National Band album, Magnetic South.

Nine Times Blue singer/guitarist Kirk Waldrop previously fronted the Athens, Georgia-based group, The Features, from 1994 – 1997, which released two singles – “Reasons Why” and “So Much Time” through Democrat Records.

The first incarnation of Nine Times Blue was formed in Washington, DC, in 1999 and lasted until the fall of 2004.  A second version formed in 2007 and functioned mainly as an acoustic duo, although a handful of full band performances were played over the next couple of years at festivals and clubs around Atlanta. In July, 2010, Nine Times Blue participated in the “343 For Kids” event benefitting the Children’s Restoration Network, which involved 343 hours of continuous music and set a record as the World’s Longest Concert (by multiple artists) in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The current lineup (Jeff Nelson, Greg King, Jason Brewer, Kirk Waldrop) was formed over the last year during the recording of Falling Slowly. “The songs on Falling Slowly are largely not autobiographical, but instead are from the perspective of others that I know or have known,” says Kirk Waldrop. “The majority of my songs are written with music and melody written first. For some reason, the majority of the ideas I have for songs come to me while driving and I sing a melody or lyrics into my phone recorder.  So – when sitting down to write songs, I just go back through all the recorded snippets on my phone and pick one or two to start with.”

Waldrop’s primary influences include The Beatles, Squeeze, Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw, Nick Lowe, The Posies, XTC, The Smithereens, Matthew Sweet and Robyn Hitchcock. Falling Slowly features several local Atlanta music friends, including former Nine Times Blue members Eric Leland and Eric Jefferson, Joe Giddings, Jonathan Gale and Jerry Mason.

In addition to his work with Nine Times Blue, Kirk Waldrop, along with his partners in Tribute LLC, organized and produced two Paul McCartney tribute compilations that were released in 2001 by Oglio Records, titled Listen to What the Man Said and Coming Up. The CDs, which featured such artists as Robyn Hitchcock, Matthew Sweet, Semisonic and They Might Be Giants, helped raise money for breast cancer research in the memory of Linda McCartney.

Joe Rathbone & The Mercy Alliance
Joe Rathbone is proud to announce the release of his fifth record entitled "Waking Up the Sun", featuring his new group The Mercy Alliance.  Waking Up the Sun includes inspired guitar work by the late Steve Bishop, who worked with the legendary Ronnie Montrose, drumming by ex Counting Crow Steve Bowman , lyrical bass from John Kessler who started his career as a member of the original Mountain Stage band and some elegant string work from producer David Henry ( David Mead Guster, Josh Rouse, Kelly Joe Phelps, Jars of Clay.
The 8 tracks range from broad open rockers like the title track : Waking Up the Sun to brooding ballads, introspective jaunts and a poignant farewell to guitarist Bishop entitled Wave. Rathbone provides raw vocals and gritty guitar playing and some colorful keyboard on all the tracks while Deanna Murray delivers some thrilling harmony singing often weaving in and out of the lead vocal. Waking Up the Sun deals with the concept of how we face loss and alienation while recognizing and accepting the incredible good fortune the world can bring.  There are gorgeous string flourishes, ecstatic feedback, watery volume swells, delirious drum loops and ethereal harmonies that resonate throughout this record and let the listener in on the heart of the matter

Scrapomatic

I'm A Stranger (And I Love The Night)

Critically acclaimed eclectic/roots music outfit Scrapomatic release I’M A STRANGER (AND I LOVE THE NIGHT) you can STREAM THE ALBUM IN FULL over at AOL MUSIC.  Last week, RELIX premiered a FREE DOWNLOAD of "Night Trains, Distant Whistles."  Grab the track here.

I'm A Stranger (And I Love The Night) continues the band’s distinctive forays through an intoxicating variety of American musical styles.  The album is a Featured New Release over at Amazon and you can pick up a copy on sale pricing in both physical and digital formats.

Led by Mike Mattison, who also sings and writes songs for the Grammy Award winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Paul Olsen, an in-demand New York musical director credited with two ASCAP songwriting awards, Scrapomatic meshes distinctly different approaches into a compelling amalgam of roots, & and homegrown soul-folk.

Mattison will pull double duty in September as Scrapomatic has added a few shows opening for TTB.  A full list of tour dates can be found below

Mike Mattison won a Grammy as lead singer with The Derek Trucks Band for 2009's Best Blues Album, Already Free.  In 2010, The Derek Trucks Band announced a hiatus, and Mattison joined the new group, Tedeschi Trucks Band, as a backing vocalist and songwriter.  He won another Grammy with TTB for 2011's Best Blues Album, Revelator. His compositions, “Bound for Glory” and "Midnight in Harlem," received significant airplay and the latter was featured in the band’s performance for the DVD of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010.

With ‘ STRANGER,’ Scrapomatic added a new permanent band member, Alabama-bred, multi faceted guitarist, Dave Yoke, while again featuring the crack Atlanta rhythm unit of Ted Pecchio (bass) and Tyler Greenwell (drums).   Marked by a wide range of forceful original material laced with poignancy, irony, and dark humor, the new album showcases each man’s ample singing and songwriting talents most sublimely.  Mattison (vocals) and Olsen (guitar, vocals) penned all 12 tracks, which were recorded in January 2012 at Swamp Raga Studios, Jacksonville, FL.

Produced by Mattison, with mixing and mastering from veteran Atlanta engineer Rodney Mills, I’M A STRANGER (AND I LOVE THE NIGHT) is solid evidence that this close knit, ongoing partnership continues to bring forth an impressive outlay of great music.
